My approach to clinical nutrition
Nutrition has a massive impact on everyone’s health. Which is why a lot of my treatment plans are based around nutrition and diet because I believe that’s how you’re going to get better long-term health benefits.
Typically, I only use supplements in the short term while we progressively make changes to your diet. I’m all about making the changes so we can all live longer, happier and healthier lives!
Clinical nutrition is a holistic approach that acknowledges the impact of nutrition and the environment on your health. When the body is provided with the correct balance of foods, vitamins and minerals we stay healthier for longer.
My core belief when I’m assessing someone in front of me is that everyone is individual in regards to our genetics and metabolism, and our internal environment varies considerably in terms of gut flora, integrity or the intestinal wall and the immune system.
All of this affects our ability to process foods, absorb nutrients and detoxify and expel wastes.
Nutrition plays a role in virtually every medical condition. The premise of nutritional medicine is that by correcting nutritional imbalances, it leads to prevention and treatment of many common conditions.
Where we trip up, nutritionally!
- We are eating too much of the wrong things (like coffee & wine & cheese, soz)
- The types of pills we pop, both pharmaceutical and recreational.
- Sticking to the same bland diet instead of eating local, seasonal fruits & vege.
- Eating foods that were a good idea at the time but you regret it later.
- Burning the candle at both ends and being a party animal/night owl.
- Letting stress dictate our diet.
How do you assess my nutritional status?
There are a number of ways to gather this information:
- Dietary assessment
- Tongue and nail assessment
- Blood tests
- Urine tests
- Food intolerance test
What type of nutritional supplements do you use?
I only prescribe practitioner-only supplements.
These products and their ingredients have been thoroughly researched and approved to have been shown to have therapeutic effects.
While I may prescribe nutritional supplements, I also recommend dietary and lifestyle modifications and set out goals so with a few extra tweaks further health issues may be prevented and you can develop good habits and long-term health benefits.
I use clinical nutrition in my Naturopathic treatment plans available either ONLINE or in my clinic located at 165 Lake Street Cairns.
My aim is to provide you with the best quality care and advice.
In order to do that the appointment structure is so we can get as much information as possible and it also allows me time to be able to accurately prescribe dietary and lifestyle changes and supplements if necessary.

Initial consultation (1 hour)
This is basically a fact-finding mission to get as much information around your health and all the aspects that impact it.
I will not only ask you the reason you’ve come, but also ask questions about your other body systems to gain a broader, holistic view of your current health state.
Typically, most people will leave this appointment with some dietary directions, and if necessary, herbal or nutritional supplements.
I may also refer you to have some blood tests to gain a deeper picture of what is going on and address any underlying nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. This may ideally need to be completed before your second consultation (Report of findings) which will be held 1-2 weeks after your initial appointment.
Second consultation – Report of Findings (30 minutes)
This consultation is held ideally 1-2 weeks following your initial consultation.
At this consultation you will receive your treatment plans that I have put together after going through all the information from your initial, as well as incorporating action plans based on your blood test results (if applicable).
Here you will receive:
- Your treatment plan to help achieve your health goals,
- Your Iridology report and photos of your eyes, as well as
- Any dietary information, lifestyle suggestions and other information that I feel you would benefit from.
We will discuss which steps would be the best for you to take to get you back on track and feeling better and also select the options that you feel would be the most manageable.
Follow up consultations
Follow up appointments time and frequency vary greatly from person to person. Depending on the agreed treatment plans, a person’s financial situation and life in general! – I try to be as flexible as possible to help support you!
